Stigma Mechanisms in Health Disparities Model
I contributed to the development of the Stigma Mechanisms in Health Disparities Model in collaboration with Dr. Stephenie Chaudoir and Stephanie Andel. This model describes ways in which social stigma is manifested at the sociocultural, interpersonal, and individual levels. It further identifies processes whereby stigma “gets under the skin” to lead to mental and physical health disparities. We considered the degree to which concealability moderates these effects, ultimately leading to different outcomes for people living with visible vs. concealable socially devalued characteristics.
